Ceramic, terracotta and EcoMix

Ceramic & Floor Vases

Vessels shaped and finished by hand, from a 12-inch terracotta round to the Cima at 23 inches. No two finishes match exactly; the variation is the record of the making.

Choose by height first. It decides where a vase can live.

Choose by height

Under 14 inches for shelves and side tables. 14 to 17 inches for the dining table. 17 to 20 inches for consoles and sideboards. 20 inches and up for the floor. These are the pieces in stock at each height.

Ceramic, terracotta, EcoMix

Ceramic is clay shaped, kiln-fired, then glazed or left matte. A reactive glaze, like the one on the Lily, moves in the kiln, so each piece leaves with its own color.

Terracotta is fired at a lower heat and stays warmer in tone. The Puebla wears a weathered brown that reads as found rather than made.

EcoMix blends natural wood fibers with recycled materials. The Emalyn uses it for a large, matte black form.

What makes a vase sculptural

Take the stems out. If the form still holds the room, it is sculpture first and vessel second.

The Cima's carved ripple, the Volare's crackled surface and flared neck, the Cera's folded lip: each is shaped to be read from across a room and to change as the light moves. Place one alone, with space around it, and let it work.

Styling

On a console, let one tall piece carry the composition and keep everything beside it low.

On a dining table, stay under 17 inches, or choose tall and narrow, so conversation passes around it.

On the floor, give a vase of 20 inches or more a corner, a landing or the end of a sofa, with a wall behind it to catch the shadow.

In groups, work in twos or threes at different heights rather than a matched pair.

Care

Dust with a soft, dry cloth. For a deeper clean, wipe with a slightly damp microfiber cloth and dry at once. Avoid abrasives, harsh cleaners and soaking.

Most of our vases are not watertight. They are made for dried stems, branches or display on their own. For fresh flowers, set a glass liner inside.

Questions about our vases

Are your ceramic vases watertight?

Most are not. They are made for dried stems, branches or display on their own. For fresh flowers, set a glass liner inside the vase and keep the water there.

What size counts as a floor vase?

Floor vases generally start around 20 inches and run up to about four feet. Ours sit at the sculptural end of that range: the Selena at 20 inches, the Cima at 23 and the Antique Green Cera at 23.5. Each weighs between 14 and 22.5 pounds, which gives it a steady footing.

What height vase works on a dining table?

Under 17 inches, so guests can see each other across it. The Sasha at 14.8 inches and the Flora at 16 sit well at the center of a table. Taller pieces belong on the sideboard.

What is the difference between ceramic and terracotta?

Both start as clay. Terracotta is fired at a lower temperature, stays more porous and keeps a warm, earthy tone. Our ceramic pieces are fired and then finished with a matte surface or a glaze.

Is every vase made by hand?

Each piece is shaped or finished by hand, so tone, texture and glaze vary slightly from one vase to the next. Expect yours to differ a little from the photographs. That variation is the point.

How do I clean a ceramic vase?

Dust with a soft, dry cloth. For a deeper clean, wipe with a slightly damp microfiber cloth and dry at once. Avoid abrasives, harsh cleaners and soaking, and keep matte finishes out of strong direct sun.

How quickly do vases ship?

In-stock vases ship within 48 hours and arrive within 5 days. Shipping is free on U.S. orders over $300.
