Travertine Coffee Tables

Four tables cut from travertine, each shaped for a different room: a 68-inch kidney curve, a freeform top on a slab base, a rectangular block with a polished onyx top, and a round top on carved, stacked legs. Every slab carries its own veining, so no two tables match.

The stone

Why travertine suits a coffee table

Travertine is a limestone that forms where mineral springs leave calcium carbonate behind, layer over layer. Gas escaping as it sets leaves the small pores and banded, linear veining that set it apart from marble, in tones from ivory and cream to beige and honey.

Honed, the surface turns matte and soft to the hand, and it hides light wear better than a polished finish. The weight of the stone keeps a table planted, and its warmth settles easily beside linen, boucle, oak and plaster.

Marble forms under heat and pressure, so it is denser and often polished to a shine. Travertine reads warmer and quieter. For a cooler, brighter stone, compare our marble coffee tables.

Sizing

How to size a travertine coffee table

  • Length. Aim for about two-thirds the length of your sofa. The 68-inch Tuscani suits a sofa near 100 inches, the 59-inch Toscana about 88 inches, and the 52-inch Palermo about 78 inches.
  • Clearance. Leave 14 to 18 inches between the table and the sofa, close enough to reach a cup and wide enough to pass.
  • Height. Keep the top level with the sofa seat or slightly lower. The Toscana stands 13 inches high, the Palermo 16 and the Tuscani 17.
  • The way in. The Tuscani weighs about 400 pounds and the Palermo 340. Tape the footprint on your floor, then measure doorways, stairs and turns on the route inside.

Care

Living with travertine

  • Set glasses on coasters and hot dishes on trivets.
  • Wipe spills promptly with a soft, damp cloth, then dry the surface.
  • Skip acidic and abrasive cleaners. Vinegar, citrus and bleach can etch the stone.
  • Reseal every one to two years to slow absorption.
  • The Palermo's onyx top is polished and softer than travertine. Lift objects rather than slide them across it.

Questions

Travertine coffee table FAQ

What shapes do your travertine coffee tables come in?

Four: the Tuscani, a 68-inch kidney shape on three round legs; the Toscana, a 59-inch freeform top on a two-piece slab base; the Palermo, a 52-inch rectangular block with a polished onyx top framed in travertine; and the Solenne, a round top on carved, stacked legs, offered in beige travertine, Tiramisu onyx or Calacatta Viola marble.

What size travertine coffee table do I need?

Aim for about two-thirds the length of your sofa, with 14 to 18 inches between the table and the seat, and a top level with the seat or slightly lower. By that measure the 68-inch Tuscani suits a sofa near 100 inches, the 59-inch Toscana about 88 inches, and the 52-inch Palermo about 78 inches.

Is travertine a good material for a coffee table?

Yes. Travertine is heavy and hard-wearing, and a honed finish hides light wear well. It is porous, so use coasters, wipe spills promptly and reseal the stone every one to two years.

Does travertine stain or etch?

It can. Travertine is a calcium-based stone with natural pores, so acids such as wine, citrus and vinegar can etch or mark it if left to sit. Wipe spills promptly, avoid acidic cleaners, and keep the stone sealed.

What is the difference between travertine and marble?

Travertine is a limestone formed by mineral springs, with small natural pores, banded veining and warm ivory to honey tones. Marble forms under heat and pressure, so it is denser, often more dramatically veined and usually polished. Travertine reads warmer and more matte.

Will my table look exactly like the photos?

Not exactly. Travertine and onyx are natural stone, so veining, pores and tone vary from one table to the next. That variation is part of the character of each piece. If you have questions about a design, ask us before you order.

How is a travertine coffee table delivered?

Shipping is free on orders over $300. In-stock tables ship in 3 to 5 business days by white glove freight. The delivery company schedules a time with you and brings the table inside, and delivery can take up to 15 days.

Can I see the tables in person?

Our showroom at 120 E 8th St in downtown Los Angeles is open by appointment. Ask which pieces are on the floor when you book.
