Stone coffee tables
Four tables cut from travertine, each shaped for a different room: a 68-inch kidney curve, a freeform top on a slab base, a rectangular block with a polished onyx top, and a round top on carved, stacked legs. Every slab carries its own veining, so no two tables match.

The stone
Travertine is a limestone that forms where mineral springs leave calcium carbonate behind, layer over layer. Gas escaping as it sets leaves the small pores and banded, linear veining that set it apart from marble, in tones from ivory and cream to beige and honey.
Honed, the surface turns matte and soft to the hand, and it hides light wear better than a polished finish. The weight of the stone keeps a table planted, and its warmth settles easily beside linen, boucle, oak and plaster.
Marble forms under heat and pressure, so it is denser and often polished to a shine. Travertine reads warmer and quieter. For a cooler, brighter stone, compare our marble coffee tables.

Questions
Four: the Tuscani, a 68-inch kidney shape on three round legs; the Toscana, a 59-inch freeform top on a two-piece slab base; the Palermo, a 52-inch rectangular block with a polished onyx top framed in travertine; and the Solenne, a round top on carved, stacked legs, offered in beige travertine, Tiramisu onyx or Calacatta Viola marble.
Aim for about two-thirds the length of your sofa, with 14 to 18 inches between the table and the seat, and a top level with the seat or slightly lower. By that measure the 68-inch Tuscani suits a sofa near 100 inches, the 59-inch Toscana about 88 inches, and the 52-inch Palermo about 78 inches.
Yes. Travertine is heavy and hard-wearing, and a honed finish hides light wear well. It is porous, so use coasters, wipe spills promptly and reseal the stone every one to two years.
It can. Travertine is a calcium-based stone with natural pores, so acids such as wine, citrus and vinegar can etch or mark it if left to sit. Wipe spills promptly, avoid acidic cleaners, and keep the stone sealed.
Travertine is a limestone formed by mineral springs, with small natural pores, banded veining and warm ivory to honey tones. Marble forms under heat and pressure, so it is denser, often more dramatically veined and usually polished. Travertine reads warmer and more matte.
Not exactly. Travertine and onyx are natural stone, so veining, pores and tone vary from one table to the next. That variation is part of the character of each piece. If you have questions about a design, ask us before you order.
