Solid stone, set beside the sofa

Marble and Travertine Side Tables

A side table is the piece you reach for most. Ours are cut from solid stone: white and ivory marble on fluted and tapered pedestals, honed travertine in sculpted and freeform shapes, and a travertine cube set with an onyx top. Each one carries its own veining.

How to choose

Height, size, shape and weight

Four things decide whether a side table works where you put it. Measure the seat beside it before you choose.

01

Height

Aim for a top level with the sofa or chair arm, or a few inches below it, so a cup lands without a reach. Our 20 and 22 inch tables suit most sofas and beds. The 16.5 inch Toscana and the 12.5 inch Tuscani sit beside a low lounge chair or a low-slung sofa. More in our side table height guide.

02

Size

A 14 inch round top holds a drink and a book and slips into a tight corner. A 20 inch top takes a lamp as well. Keep the table a few inches from the seat so it stays in reach without touching the upholstery.

03

Shape

Round and freeform tops soften a room of straight lines and are easy to walk past. Square tops line up with a bed or a squared sofa arm. A pedestal base reads lighter; a solid cube reads as architecture.

04

Weight

Solid stone is heavy, from 57 pounds for the Toscana to 170 pounds for the Palermo. That weight keeps a table steady when it is bumped. Choose its place first, and set felt pads underneath before it goes down.

Living with stone

Care for a stone side table

  • Coasters, always. Glasses and mugs leave rings, and wine, coffee and citrus can etch marble and travertine.
  • Wipe, then dry. A soft, slightly damp cloth is enough. Skip vinegar, citrus and abrasive cleaners.
  • Reseal. A stone sealer every one to two years keeps stains from setting in.
  • Every table varies. Veining, pores and tone differ from slab to slab, so no two tables match.

Questions

Stone side table FAQ

Is marble or travertine better for a side table?

Both work well. Marble is denser, with clear veining and a cool, smooth surface, but acids such as wine or citrus can dull it. Travertine is a porous limestone with warm beige tones, and a honed travertine top hides light wear well. Choose marble for crisp veining and travertine for a soft, matte look. Either way, use coasters.

Is a travertine side table durable?

Yes. Travertine is solid stone and suits everyday use beside a sofa or bed. It is porous, so wipe spills quickly, use coasters, and reseal it every one to two years to keep stains from setting in.

What are the pros and cons of a marble side table?

A marble side table is heavy and steady, carries natural veining no other table will share, and lasts for decades. It also needs care: acids can etch it, it should be resealed every one to two years, and its weight means you choose its place once.

How tall should a side table be?

Level with the arm of the sofa or chair beside it, or a few inches lower, so a cup is within easy reach. Measure the arm first. Our side tables range from 12.5 inches, for a low lounge chair, to 23 inches.

How much does a marble or travertine side table cost?

Our stone side tables start at for the Waverly white marble end table, and run to for the Palermo travertine and onyx side table. Prices on this page update with the shop.

How heavy is a stone side table?

Heavy. Our listed weights run from 57 pounds for the Toscana travertine side table to 170 pounds for the Palermo travertine and onyx cube. Plan for two people to move one, and set felt pads underneath to protect the floor.

Can a stone side table be used as a nightstand?

Yes. A 20 inch table such as the Palermo or the Waverly sits level with many mattresses and has room for a lamp and a book. Measure from the floor to the top of your mattress before you choose.

How do I clean a marble or travertine side table?

Wipe it with a soft, slightly damp cloth and dry it. Avoid vinegar, citrus and abrasive cleaners, which can etch the stone. Wipe spills, especially coffee, wine and juice, right away, and reseal the stone every one to two years.

How are the side tables delivered?
